ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya celebrates
WORLD SOIL DAY, 2025

        ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya celebrated the World Soil Day, 2025 on 5th December 2025 with a Farmers-scientists interaction cum awareness programme on “healthy soils for healthy cities” at Sohlait thymmai, R-Bhoi district, Meghalaya. The programme was sponsored by the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP), ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya with the aim to sensitize the tribal communities about the vital role soil plays in food security and environmental health, importance of soil testing and to encourage the adoption of sustainable soil management practices. About ninety (90) participants comprising of tribal farmers and youths, scientists, research scholars and supporting staffs of the institute participated in the event. Dr. Braj Pal Singh, Head, Division of Technology Assessment & Capacity Building (DTAC) and Nodal Officer, TSP graced the occasion. During the interactive session between scientists and farmers, experts from different specializations tried to address the farmers’ concerns and provided suggestions regarding improvement in soil health emphasizing on the importance of furrow liming for acid soil management, composting, organic farming and integrated nutrient management etc. Agricultural inputs viz., hand fork, garden rake, maize sheller, seeds of pea, french bean, coriander were distributed to the farmers. The programme was coordinated by a team of scientists - Dr. Mahasweta Chakraborty, Dr. T. Ramesh, Dr. Christy Sangma, Dr. L. Joymati Chanu, Dr. A. Balusamy, Dr. M.Prabha Devi, Dr. B. Makdoh, Dr. Y. Bijen Kumar, Dr. Niranjan Kumar with the active support and encouragement of Dr. S.Hazarika, Head, DSRE & Director of the institute.
